# Enter a Reading

Use the :NewMeterReadIcon: New meter reading tab on the Site Details screen to enter readings.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ This tab won’t be available if the meter is read automatically.

## Adding an Image to the Reading

Your system may be configured to require an image to be added to any reading that will be referred to a Planner. If so, you’ll be prompted to add an image when you save the reading.

> ⚠️ **Note**
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ If you are saving your readings offline, you will not be able to add reasons or images to the reading at this stage. Please save any images you will need on your phone so that you can edit the offline readings and add the images when you upload the readings.

# Add remote meter readings

If a meter can be read remotely, the :remoteReading: Remote Reading icon will be available in the Meter Reading field. Click the icon to fetch the reading.

# What happens if I am offline when I take the reading?

You can still enter readings when you are offline. The readings are saved on your device as offline readings. You can upload them from the [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MCN/pages/2202730545](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MCN/pages/2202730545) screen when you reconnect to the network.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ If you expect to be working offline you can:
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ - Save parts of the map offline by [Configuring the Map Type](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MCN/pages/2203419250/Sites+-+Site+List+and+Site+Map#Configuring-the-Map-Type) and [Configuring Offline Map Tiles](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MCN/pages/2203419250/Sites+-+Site+List+and+Site+Map#Configuring-Offline-Map-Tiles).
> ℹ️ - Configure MeterConnect to save [https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MCN/pages/2207154236](https://rubiconwater.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/MCN/pages/2207154236) including estimated readings, water account details, site images, and site notes.

# What happens if the reading is an estimate?

If the reading is an estimate you will be prompted to enter a reason for entering an estimate and the reading will be referred to a Planner. Choose an appropriate reason from the drop-down list provided or choose *Other*. You can also leave a note with the reading if you want to add more detail.

# What happens if the reading is out of range?

If the reading is outside the expected range (as configured for your network) you will be prompted to enter a reason and the reading will be referred to a Planner for review. The reading status will be set to *Variance Exceeded *and the reading will appear on the planner’s Referred Readings list.

> ℹ️ **Note**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ You won’t be able to enter new readings for the site until the planner has reviewed and accepted the reading.

# What happens if there is a pending referred reading for the site?

If there is a pending referred reading for the site you will not be able to enter a new reading until the planner has reviewed and accepted the referred reading.

# What happens if the reading is for a site that does not deliver orders?

In some cases you may need to enter meter readings at a site that does not deliver orders. In this case there is no expected range for the reading and therefore there is no check for variance.

> ℹ️ **Example**
> ℹ️
> ℹ️ The site may be a diversion or a pipeline.

# What happens if the reading exceeds allocation?

If the reading will exceed allocation, a warning message as shown below is displayed. You can still proceed to enter the reading. If the reading is still above the threshold values you’ll be prompted to enter it as a high reading.
